According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, they believe the San Francisco 49ers have a real shot at receiving the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
In fact, ESPN ranks four teams who they believe have the best chance of receiving the top pick in next year’s draft as the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, and San Diego Chargers are also among the teams mentioned.
However, at least two of those teams already have their franchise quarterback in place, as the Titans spent the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft on QB Marcus Mariota while the Chargers went all-in on QB Philip Rivers as he signed a four-year contract worth $84 million.
That leaves the 49ers and the Browns as the lone players for a quarterback. However, I would strongly urge the 49ers to pass on the top two quarterbacks in this year’s NFL draft as Cal’s QB Jared Goff and Memphis’ QB Paxton Lynch are second-round talents at best in my opinion.
Sure, Lynch has the size of ‘Big Ben’ as in Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger but I question whether he has the accuracy to thread the needle in traffic. However, I am much higher on Goff, as I do believe he has the skill-set to be a pure pocket passer at the NFL level.
Goff has the poise, leadership, and confidence inside the huddle and knows how to move around the pocket in order to give his receivers enough time to get open downfield.
Whomever the 49ers choose with their first-round pick remains to be seen, as GM Trent Baalke could to the unthinkable — stockpile more draft picks and trade down. The more bullets you have the greater the chance of hitting on a prospect theory is an approach Baalke believes in, if the price is right. So don’t be surprised if this happens.
