Before San Francisco 49ers FS Lance Schulters, FS Dashon Goldson, and FS Eric Reid, there was another free-safety patrolling the 49ers secondary in four-time Pro Bowl FS Merton Hanks. Originally a fifth-round pick (No. 122) in the 1991 NFL Draft, Hanks would be the ballhawk on the backend from 1991-1998 while recording 31 interceptions and 100 pass break-ups. However, it was his signature “Chicken dance” that made headlines during his career, as he used his long neck to his advantage while giving himself multiple whiplashes.
Hanks currently serves as the NFL Vice President of Operations in charge of player conduct.
