VIDEO: Native Americans to protest 49ers-Redskins Game with “Change the name. Change the mascot!” chant

According to Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows, the San Francisco 49ers upcoming matchup with Washington should be quite controversial as many Native Americans plan to protest the game outside Levi’s Stadium yelling; “Change the name. Change the mascot.”

Tony Gonzales, director of American Indian Movement-West, said he initially figured the rally would draw 200. He now expects double that amount, Barrows reports. However, due to the expected turnout, many Santa Clara Police Department police officers will be in full force starting at around 10 a.m. Sunday.

Washington’s owner Dan Snyder insists the name is not a racial-slur and voiced his opinion on ESPN’s Outside the Lines, as he said; “It’s just historical truths, and I’d like them to understand, as I think most do, that the name really means honor, respect.”
