Vic Fangio On 49ers: “That’s Their Decision And Their Choice.”

Although San Francisco 49ers current head coach Jim Tomsula won the head coaching position, it didn’t come without some serious controversy as DC Vic Fangio was also in the running.

A well respected defensive coordinator who has yielded top five defenses in his first four seasons in San Francisco, he seemed to appear (at least on the outside) to have a solid chance of replacing Jim Harbaugh. However, that didn’t happen.

The 49ers who brought in Adam Gase, Mike Shanahan, Rex Ryan, Dan Quinn, Todd Bowles, Josh McDaniels, Teryl Austin and Doug Marrone for interviews opted to settle on Tomsula as their hand-picked guy.

Fangio spoke about that decision as he met with the Chicago Beat Writers. “That’s their decision and their choice,” Fangio said. “I have nothing to do with that.”

I spoke with many of the current and former 49ers players who believe that Fangio would be a successful head coach but for some reason isn’t getting that opportunity. “He’s smart and understands football. It’s surprising that he’s not a head coach,” said one 49ers player who asked to remain anonymous.

Fangio was asked if it was hard to swallow when the team past him up for the position: “No, I’ve just always accepted it’s their decision, their team. They do what they want with it.”
