The San Francisco 49ers brought back a familiar face to the team’s coaching staff today as Bay Area product Jason Tarver was named the team’s new defensive assistant/linebackers coach according to CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.
Tarver, who has Bay Area ties as he grew up in the East Bay while also attending West Valley College and Santa Clara University, worked with most recently the Oakland Raiders as their team’s defensive coordinator. However, due to the Raiders hiring new head coach Jack Del Rio, Tarver became expendable and thus made available to look elsewhere.
A true student of the game, Tarver will now take his football savvy back to San Francisco where he first worked as the team’s offensive quality control coach from 2001 to 2003.
A mainstay coach despite the Niners head coaching revolving door, Tarver would remain on the 49ers staff as he was promoted to assistant running backs coach and offensive assistant in 2004 before finally cementing his place as the team’s linebackers coach from 2005 to 2010.
Tarver will now take over for former linebackers coach Jim Leavitt as he works with ILB Patrick Willis once again.
