Sakamoto: Shilique Calhoun Displays Fluid Hips In Front of 49ers Scouts

According to Gil Brandt of, the San Francisco 49ers led positional drills during OLB Shilique Calhoun’s pro day workout. Calhoun known around NFL circles to be a bit of a ‘tweener,’ will need to show scouts that he can play in a two-point stance, attack the quarterback, while setting the edge in run support. “I just wanted to show the scouts that I can move in space, a lot of teams see me as a 3-4 outside linebacker so I just wanted to show that I can flip my hips,” Calhoun said after his pro day workout.

Calhoun mainly played in a three-point stance at Michigan State, so making the transition as an outside linebacker in a team’s 3-4 base may be a bit challenging. However, Mike Mayock of NFL Network believes that Calhoun solidified his position by giving him a solid second-round grade.

At the NFL Scouting combine, Calhoun showed off his athleticism with a 4.82 40-yard dash, 35-inch vertical, 115-inch broad jump, 6.97 three-cone drill, and 23 reps on the bench press of 225 pounds. Those measurables confirm what scouts see on tape, which is an edge-rusher with the ability to register double-digit sack seasons year in and year out.

So with the 49ers looking for an edge-rusher to pair with third-year OLB Aaron Lynch, where should the 49ers select Calhoun if he’s available when they are on the clock? I would agree with Mayock as I gave him a second-round grade. The 49ers hold the No. 36 pick in the second-round and using it on Calhoun may be in the cards, if the team addresses their right tackle position with the selection of T Ronnie Stanley at No. 7.

A boom or bust prospect, I see a little bit of DE/OLB Quinton Coples in Calhoun. In 2015, Calhoun finished with 14.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.
