According to draft insider Tony Pauline of Walter Football, the San Francisco 49ers are one of two teams to be rumored in trade talks with the Philadelphia Eagles regarding RB Ryan Mathews if the team selects Ohio State RB Ezekial Elliott with the No. 8 overall pick.

The Eagles who already traded away starting RB DeMarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans, now appear to be looking for a potential trade partner for their change-of-pace back Mathews. The Dallas Cowboys are the other team to be rumored for Matthews’ services but it’s highly unlikely that he will be dealt to a division rival making the 49ers the favorite of the two teams.

However, does trading for Mathews make sense for a team that already has a stable of running backs including RB Carlos Hyde, RB Shaun Draughn, RB Mike Davis and RB Jarryd Hayne? I don’t think so. But he would be an instant upgrade to Draughn while spelling Hyde in goal-line situations which is a good thing.

In 13 games last season, Mathews rushed 106 times for 539 yards (5.1 avg.) and 6 touchdowns while adding 20 receptions for 146 yards and 1 touchdown.
