Sakamoto: Practice Squad Prediction For 2015

Yesterday I predicted the San Francisco 49ers’ 53-man roster and now I will project the team’s 10 player practice squad. And while the practice squad projections are based on who I think will clear waivers, as opposed to who they should retain, it will be interesting to see who they actually keep under new head coach Jim Tomsula.

However, the practice squad does have some guidelines/requirements as not everyone is eligible. So below is a breakdown of those rules along with the 10 players who I believe will be on the team’s squad. So without further ado, here we go.

Practice Squad Eligibility Requirements (Must Meet One of These)

  • Player must have NO prior accrued NFL season (accrued season is having six or more games on the active roster)
  • Player has ONE prior accrued NFL season in which player was on active 45-man roster for no more than 8 games.
  • IF player served two seasons on team’s practice squad they are eligible for third season IF the team has at least 53 players on it’s active roster for the duration of that player’s employment.


Players Rights

  • While on the team’s practice squad, the player has the right to sign with another team’s 53-man roster. However, the player may NOT sign a contact with his current team’s next opponent until after 1 p.m. PT six days preceding the game (10 days preceding bye week).
