While many Forever Faithful have been growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of off-season free-agent signings, no one can be upset with the players they retained. First, they inked defensive team captain NT Ian Williams, and now they locked up one of the best kickers in the NFL, as K Phil Dawson has agreed to a one-year deal.
Considered by many to be the San Francisco 49ers MVP as of late, Dawson has been a huge part of the team’s success since his arrival in 2013. In his first season as a Niner, Dawson recorded the second most points and made field-goals in a season with 140 and 32 respectively. Known to be one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, Dawson’s retention should not be surprising as he told me he loves the Bay Area.
Last season, Dawson connected on 24 of 27 field-goal attempts. With the 49ers still having an abundance of cap room to work with, it will be interesting to see what GM Trent Baalke does from here, as plenty of holes still need to be filled.
