Sakamoto: 49ers’ To Host Pre Draft Visit For OLB Kamalei Correa

The San Francisco 49ers have been doing their due diligence on edge rushers, and as a result will be hosting Honolulu native, OLB Kamalei Correa on a pre-draft visit — making it the ninth known pre-draft visit. Each NFL team is allocated 30 pre-draft visits, and it appears the 49ers are set to make Correa the third outside linebacker to go under the microscope at Levi’s Stadium.

Correa paced the Boise State Broncos in both sacks and tackles for loss in 2015, and while his stats drastically dropped from his sophomore season, in which he had 12 sacks and 19 tackles for loss, it was more due to offenses shifting/focusing to his side.

With Correa leaving the Boise State program a year early, it marks the third straight season a Broncos player had done that as DE Demarcus Lawrence (2014) and RB Jay Ajayi (2015) have done before him.

So what should Forever Faithful expect from the Boise State product if the team decides to draft him? While he is a little bit on the smaller side, as he measured 6-3, 243, don’t be surprised if the team drafts him in the 3rd to 4th rounds as he could add tremendous value on special-teams.

A unit that is often overlooked, special-teams is just as important as the other two phases of the game, as I believe field position plays a huge role in winning and losing. Let’s be honest, the team lost a plethora of special-teams aces over the years, and it’s time to replenish those losses. From ST Bubba Ventrone, CB Darryl Morris, FS C.J. Spillman, WR Kassim Osgood, and LB Blake Costanzo, the 49ers need a much needed face-lift and Correa could be the first step in making that happen.

With 49ers GM Trent Baalke trying to rebuild his roster back into a playoff contender, he will have plenty of opportunities to do so in this year’s NFL draft, as the 49ers lead the NFL with 12 draft picks.
