Sakamoto: 49ers’ Send WRC Bob Bicknell And OLC Pat Flaherty To Notre Dame Pro Day

During the NFL draft process each NFL team has regional scouts who travel the country year-round in hopes of finding that diamond in the rough. Then when the off-season comes around, the general manager will re-evaluate their scouting departments research, formulate their assignments, and then cross-check their findings when the NFL combine and pro days roll around.

Often times, the general manager, director of college scouting, and other higher-ups, will travel to a game in order to evaluate certain prospects during the course of the season to better gauge a potential prospect. After all of that has come to past and the off-season is here, it’s time for the coaching staff sometimes to then give their feedback on potential prospects, and that’s exactly what the San Francisco 49ers did at Notre Dame’s pro day yesterday, as WRC Bob Bicknell and OLC Pat Flaherty were on hand.

Bicknell was on hand watching Notre Dame WR Will Fuller while Flaherty was seen working with sure-fire top 10 pick T Ronnie Stanley. Another interesting note here is, it appears that I also spotted the 49ers VP of Football Operations Jeff Ferguson (Fergy) roaming the sidelines, but I’m not 100 percent sure on that.

Ferguson oversees the team’s sports medicine, strength and conditioning, among other things, and was likely there to do a medical re-check on ILB Jaylon Smith if that indeed was him. Smith, did not partake in the pro day other than the coveted bench press where he posted the third highest rep count of any linebacker at the NFL combine with 24 reps.

Smith will be coming to Levi’s Stadium in the coming weeks on a pre-draft visit, so it appears they are serious about taking the No. 1 ranked linebacker in this year’s draft class despite his ACL and LCL injury. Some NFL analysts believe that Smith will drop to the second-round, but I don’t foresee that happening if Smith’s medical checks out, leaving me to believe that the 49ers may jump back in the tail-end of the first-round to secure his services.

The 49ers have an NFL-high 12 draft picks heading into the draft, and you can be sure they will not use them all, as GM Trent Baalke will likely strike two-for-one or three-for-one deals to get the most bang for their buck.
