Sakamoto: 49ers’ RB Carlos Hyde Placed On IR, Promote TE Brian Leonhardt To Active Roster

A source close to the situation told me back on November 2 that San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde could be placed on the Injured Reserve list. It turns out that was correct, as Hyde was officially placed on the team’s Injured Reserve list ending his second NFL season.

A bruising running back between the tackles, it became apparent that Hyde was no longer able to plant or cut on his foot leading them to sign free-agent running backs off the street.

In seven games this season, Hyde has amassed 115 carries for 470 rushing yards and three touchdowns while providing a stable yet solid rushing attack.

With Hyde shelved for the season, the team then promoted TE Brian Leonhardt from the practice squad.

Early Wednesday morning, I received word that the team was promoting Leonhardt to the active roster. A roster move that was needed as TE Garrett Celek was placed on the Injured Reserve while TE Vance McDonald was ruled ‘out’ with a concussion, Leonhardt will now get his chance to shine while wearing No. 46.

On Thursday, I  asked 49ers OC Geep Chryst in his presser about his new tight-end since he loves to use 13 personnel.

Me: You like to use 13 personnel a lot. What have you seen from TE Brian Leonhardt in practice and how do you think he will transition?

“First off, Brian had spent time with [tight ends coach] Tony Sparano and Tony’s done a nice job. Whenever we compliment people for developing, it often times comes down to that position coach and the nice job that they’ve done. So, we’re trying to get him, Brian is here and he’s trying to get him ramped up. He’s had some familiarity with him. We’ll see where that takes us, but we’re not afraid of running plays.”

With the 49ers trying to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, it should be a cake walk as they place the lowly Cleveland Browns.
