Sakamoto: 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan Coaching Staff Taking Shape

The San Francisco 49ers have hired the man responsible for ending the franchise’s quest for six in legacy HC Kyle Shanahan (37). The son of former 49ers offensive coordinator (1992-1994) and three-time Super Bowl winner, Mike Shanahan, Kyle will hope to endure similar success, as he takes over a franchise that is hurting for answers.

Shanahan may be young, but his track record speaks volumes about his ability to light up a scoreboard–evident by guiding the Atlanta Falcons’ high-octane offense in 2016, while boasting the NFL’s No. 1 offense

But with any NFL coaching change, it likely comes with a myriad of coaching staff shake-ups, and the 49ers are no different. According to numerous reports, the 49ers have cleaned house in regards to their Strength and Conditioning staff, including long-time Strength Coach Mark Uyeyama. The coach known as “Uye” was a favorite among many of the players, and all highly praised his ability to get the most out of them.

However, the 49ers felt a change was needed, and a fresh start was in order, especially with the current Lynch/Shanahan era set to begin.

So what does the 49ers new-look coaching staff look like? Some names have already hit the internet with Bobby Taylor (67), coaching the running backs (First reported by Gil Brandt), New York Giants Assistant DLC Jeff Zgonina (46), coaching the defensive line, Rich Scangarello coaching the quarterbacks (First reported by USA Today), and Falcons offensive assistants Mike McDaniel and Mike LaFleur coming to the Bay Area with unidentified roles.

Now, you may be asking yourself, but what happens to long-time great and fan favorite RBC Tom Rathman? The 49ers plan to keep him in some capacity, as they should, but with Taylor at the helm, a reduced role may force Rathman out. In addition, it’s been reported that the 49ers will also retain OLBC Jason Tarver and DBC Jeff Hafley, both who are considered a player’s coach.
