Just one day after announcing OC Curtis Modkins, STC Derious Swinton, and OLC Pat Flaherty as the offensive coordinator, special-teams coordinator, and offensive line coach, respectively, the 49ers announced another hire as they signed away former LBC coach Hardy Nickerson to the same position according to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports.
Nickerson, who broke into the NFL as a coach under Lovie Smith with the Chicago Bears in 2007, was a Smith favorite, and followed Smith to Tampa Bay where he would be named the team’s linebackers coach in 2014.
Nickerson was considered one of the best at his position during his playing career as he topped 100+ tackles in six of seven seasons in Tampa Bay, will now try and use that experience to help a young but talented linebackers unit.
However, with Nickerson on board, where does that leave OLBC Jason Tarver? Will he be retained? That question remains to be seen, and we will just have to wait and see how the rest of HC Chip Kelly’s coaching staff shapes up, as many more hirings will be announced in the near future.
