Sakamoto: 49ers’ Chip Kelly Quickly Replaces Hardy Nickerson While Adding 4 Others

The San Francisco 49ers finally announced the addition of five new coaches to HC Chip Kelly’s coaching staff. And while some were revealed weeks ago, others were not. So how is Kelly’s new coaching staff coming together? Learn the full details below.

Dana Bible (Senior Analyst): Bible worked with QB Russell Wilson while at North Carolina State as the team’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. It’s that kind of experience that will undoubtedly help Kelly in managing and installing his zone-read offense, all while being another set of eyes for Kelly to lean on when called upon.

ILBC Joe Bowden: The former NFL linebacker turned NFL coach takes over for the abrupt departure of ILBC Hardy Nickerson as he accepted a higher position to be the University of Illinois Defensive Coordinator. Bowden, enters his fifth season as an NFL coach, after serving his first four as an assistant linebackers coach with the Los Angeles Rams. Bowden played for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans from 1992-1999 and Dallas Cowboys in 2000.

Tem Lukabu (Defensive Quality Control): Lukabu, 34, enters his third season as an NFL coach as he first broke into the NFL with the Tampa Bay Bucs back in 2012-2013 serving as the team’s defensive assistant.

Kevin O’Connell (Special Projects): A familiar face from my alma mater San Diego State University makes his way to the Bay Area after a short playing career in the NFL. A 4-time team captain at SDSU while being the school’s all-time leading rusher of all quarterbacks, O’Connell will now serve as the team’s special projects coordinator after serving one year as the Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach.

Vince Oghobaase (Assistant Defensive Line Coach): Oghobaase joins the 49ers after serving as a defensive graduate assistant at Ohio State. He has no NFL coaching experience to date.
