When the San Francisco 49ers signed RB Reggie Bush everyone knew the type of player they were getting. A player that is more of a change-of-pace back rather than a workhorse, Bush was primarily signed to be the outside the tackles runner and receiving threat out of the backfield. However, Bush is now pushing the coaching staff for him to be a threat in the return game.
“Well it was my idea. I told coaches that I want to return punts again,” Bush told beat writers on Thursday. And apparently the coaching staff is giving in to Bush’s request, “They’re excited about it,” added Bush.
Bush has not returned a punt since 2011 so it will be interesting to see how he responds, as he gets acclimated once again to the nuances of what the job entails.
But Bush isn’t the only one looking to field punt duties as he will likely have to fend off former rugby star RB Jarryd Hayne. As I was watching practice I saw Hayne field four punts cleanly while holding onto each ball before the fifth one fell to the ground.
With the 49ers looking to shore up their special-teams, it will be a camp battle to watch as Hayne and Bush will likely get a strong look at punt return duties as the season approaches.
