Recently Fired Chip Kelly Met With 49ers To Discuss Head Coach Position

The San Francisco 49ers continue their search for the franchise’s 20th head coach as they have interviewed Chip Kelly late Thursday night. First reported by Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, Kelly appeared to be the next man up, as I heard GM Trent Baalke’s first choice was New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton.

Kelly reportedly reached out to the team about their head coaching vacancy, and as a result a meeting took place. Kelly has ties with 49ers Senior Personnel Executive Tom Gamble as the two worked together in Philly, so good rapport may be in play here.

A hot commodity coming from the college ranks, Kelly proved his worth in his rookie season as he turned a 4-12 laughingstock into 10-6 NFC East Champions. The success continued the following season as the Eagles went on to again finish with a 10-6 record but failed to reach the playoffs.

However things began to go sour as Kelly made some bold moves trading away the team’s best players. From their All-Pro RB LeSean McCoy to QB Nick Foles, Kelly made some bold moves as he tried to re-tool the roster.

But Kelly wasn’t the only coach to be interviewed as Bills assistant HC/RB Coach Anthony Lynn also met with 49ers management.

With the 49ers continuing to do their due diligence it will be interesting to see who they hire as the next coach has Super Bowl or bust expectations.
