NFL Hires Sarah Thomas As It’s First Female Official

According to multiple reports, it appears that the NFL has finally hired their first female official as Sarah Thomas will be calling games in 2015. The news first broke by Baltimore Sun Aaron Wilson.

Thomas was hired along with seven other men as part of the new officials for 2015. Four officials retired at the end of the 2014 season opening the door for Thomas and others to fulfill that role.

Thomas had already made history by becoming the first woman to officiate a major college football game, the first to officiate a bowl game, and the first to officiate in a Big Ten stadium.

However, Thomas isn’t the first woman to officiate an NFL game as Shannon Eastin was hired as a temporary non-union official during the 2012 lockout.
