The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have released WR Kassim Osgood and WR Lavelle Hawkins. Two players that would have been assets to the team, it ended up being a numbers game and thus their release. Being an SDSU alumni, I was hoping Osgood would somehow crack the 53-man roster, but due to his limited versatility as just being a special-teams ace, it became apparent that he wouldn’t provide the 49ers offense with what they were looking for, a down-field threat.
As for Hawkins, I have to admit I was not high on the kid when the Niners first signed him. I thought other players such as WR Chad Hall and WR Austin Collie were further along and thus Hawkins was brought in to merely create some camp competition. However, Hawkins not only created some camp competition, but quickly became an underdog favorite to make the team. Many Forever Faithful were pulling him to make the team but in the end that was not the end result. Hawkins will likely catch on another NFL team, as he clearly has the talent to be a No. 4 wide receiver in this league, so we wish him the best of luck.
