The San Francisco 49ers have all but assured seven players as they form their practice squad, those players include OT Carter Bykowski, OT Patrick Omameh, RB Jewel Hampton, WR Chuck Jacobs, DT Mike Purcell, CB Darryl Morris, and S Michael Thomas. Both Jacobs and Morris have been holding their own in training camp and preseason leaving them to be two obvious choices for the eight-man practice squad. However, there is one spot still up for grabs as the 49ers round out their eight-man practice squad.
Some players that have been released, have already been claimed by other NFL teams, including FS Trenton Robinson (Philadelphia Eagles), CB Marcus Cooper (Kansas City Chiefs), WR Chad Hall (Kansas City Chiefs), WR Ricardo Lockette (Chicago Bears), and TE MarQueis Gray (Cleveland Browns). Hall and Lockette were two of my dark horses to make the team but unfortunately became a numbers game and thus their release.
So with so many players being claimed off waivers from other teams, which player will be the final piece to the eight-man practice squad? That will be on the back burner for now, as the 49ers just added another player from the hated rival Seattle Seahawks.
According to ESPN, the 49ers claimed WR Chris Harper off waivers from the Seahawks. A 2013 fourth-round pick (No. 123), Harper is built in the mold of WR Jon Baldwin. At 6-foot-1, 229 pounds, Harper has the rare blend of strength, size, and speed to be a big play receiver in red zone opportunities. While at Kansas State, Harper hauled in 58 receptions for 857 yards and three touchdowns his senior season. A player that Mike Mayock was high on coming out of the draft, as he said:
Pete (Carroll) likes big, physical players. You start about building a football team, they have one of the most explosive players in Percy Harvin. Now they have a big-body wideout in Chris Harper.
One day after hoping they would bring back FB Michael Robinson, the 49ers did in fact steal another Seahawk on the offensive side of the ball but at the wide out position instead.
With the 49ers looking to round out their eight-man practice squad it will be interesting to see who they keep.
