The San Francisco 49ers received some great news yesterday as four players practiced for the very first time this season. Those players include WR Mario Manningham, CB Eric Wright, DE Tank Carradine, and NT Quinton Dial. Under NFL rules, the 49ers must now make a decision on whether to add them to their 53-man roster or send them to the injured reserve list ending their season, as there is a 21-day window for such a decision. However, no player will be valued more than Manningham.
In Manningham’s last two seasons he has only played in 12 games, as he has become injury prone. However, despite the limited games played in San Francisco, Manningham ended up finishing the season as the No. 3 wide receiver in terms of stats with 42 catches for 449 yards and one touchdown. A player that seems to make the biggest plays on the game’s biggest stage, Manningham will surely be counted on whenever he comes back. There is no reason for me to believe that WR Kyle Williams is the answer, as he has done absolutely nothing up to this point and quite frankly throughout his entire career. Through six games this season, Williams has 10 catches for 101 yards, and those numbers are not going to improve any time soon, making Manningham’s speedy recovery that much more important.
Aside from Manningham getting re-acclimated with the offense, it will be two rookies that will soon earn their stripes, as second-round steal Carradine and fifth-round pick Dial add a fountain of youth along the defensive line. At a time where injuries have hit the defensive line at an alarming rate as NT Ian Williams (out for season) and now NT Glenn Dorsey (questionable), it will be up to the depth of the rookies to step in and be the “next man up.”
With the 49ers preparing for the Tennessee Titans, look for them to cautiously ease these four players back, as they will likely wait until after the Jacksonville Jaguars game before activating anyone, starting with Manningham.
