When the San Francisco 49ers drafted FS Eric Reid in the first-round (No. 18) of the 2013 NFL Draft, many people including myself were skeptical. The unquestioned leader of the LSU secondary, Reid at times would take bad angles to the ball while getting beat deep against the faster receivers, not anymore. Through six games, Reid has had an impressive rookie season thus far evident by 27 tackles, three interceptions, five passes defensed, and one fumble recovery. A player that has suddenly had a knack for being around the ball, Reid recorded his first NFL game in which he was involved in multiple turnovers against the Arizona Cardinals.
In that game, Reid had a 53-yard interception return in the first quarter and a key fumble recovery in the third-quarter. Those two plays were clutch, as the Niners were trying to create some breathing room while putting the game away. Simply put, Reid is ballin’ out of control.
Aside from Reid’s playmaking ability, it’s his physical presence that has been a huge lift for the secondary. When FS Dashon Goldson departed via free-agency that left a huge void at the free-safety position. The hard-hitting safety that doubled as a ballhawk, Goldson provided the Niners with a sense of security in the secondary. However, Goldson took his talents to Tampa Bay and in comes the young rookie Reid. And receivers have taken notice.

During their week two matchup against the Seattle Seahawks it was WR Sidney Rice that felt the pain. A game that saw Rice hold onto the ball, he had to pay a toll as Reid laid a legal shoulder into Rice’s body. A violent hit across the middle, Reid came up on the wrong end as he gave himself a concussion and did not return.
With Reid remaining poised and savvy beyond his years, the sky’s the limit for this rookie as he continues to wow the NFL while being a top candidate for Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.
