How Patrick Willis’ Retirement Influenced Vernon Davis To Attend Voluntary Workouts

A new face was at voluntary workouts this off-season as San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis was working hard on the field. Why the change of heart?

While Davis simply says he wants to get better and build team chemistry with his new teammates, it’s a former teammate that had an influence in him being in the building and that’s Patrick Willis.

“Patrick Willis put everything in perspective for a lot of guys around here with him retiring. That just gave me some insight and it put a good taste in my mouth as far as my approach towards the game and just giving this game all I can give it and taking it one day at a time and give it my best.”

The 49ers who lost their heart and soul of both the offense and defense as RB Frank Gore is now in Indianapolis while Willis retired –makes Davis a likely candidate to be one of the more vocal leaders in 2015.

With the 49ers possibly losing two captains from 2014 (if DE Justin Smith retires), it will likely be ILB NaVorro Bowman and SS Antoine Bethea  on defense while Davis may be a new captain as well in 2015.
