According to numerous reports, the San Francisco 49ers have scheduled a pre-draft visit for Florida State DL Eddie Goldman.
At 6-4, 336, Goldman is your prototypical two-gap defensive lineman who has the strength and quickness to thrive in a 3-4 scheme. A versatile player that can play the piano along the defensive line as he can line up at multiple positions including the zero technique at nose tackle makes Goldman an intriguing prospect.
During his Pro Day, Goldman ran a 5.27 40-yard dash while displaying a 26-inch vertical. Not great numbers but what would you expect from a 330-plus pound mammoth? However one thing that was concerning during his time at Florida State was his lack of pass rush ability.
Goldman won’t garner double-digit sack numbers or lead the team in quarterback hurries. But what he does bring to the team is a physical presence that understands gap integrity, stack-and-shed, and leverage responsibilities.
So where does Goldman fit if indeed San Francisco selects him with the 15th pick?
In all honesty, I think it would be wise for the team to pass on a defensive lineman but if they do select Goldman he would be considered a safe pick that would bring depth to an already stable unit.
In other news, the 49ers have also scheduled a pre-draft visit with Washington State WR Vince Mayle. At 6-2 and 224 pounds, Mayle looks like eye-candy for any general manager. He’s big and comes from a basketball background — something GM Trent Baalke covets as he often refers to ‘spacing’ when talking about wide-receivers with basketball backgrounds. However, he did run a slow 4.67 40-yard dash which is concerning.
