After meeting with numerous head coaching candidates, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York and GM Trent Baalke finally found their guy for the job as they will stay in-house by promoting DL coach Jim Tomsula to head coach.
49ers set to promote DL coach Jim Tomsula to head coach, per sources. Still ironing out details, but Tomsula expected to be 49ers next HC.

A charismatic and well-liked coach by many inside the 49ers organization, it was Tomsula who eventually beat out other household names including DC Vic Fangio. And while many believe he has zero head coaching experience that’s not entirely true as he coached the Rhein Fire (NFL Europe) back in 2006 to a 6-4 record while also going a perfect 1-0 after the 49ers beat the Arizona Cardinals back in 2010.
However, the question remains whether Tomsula can garner the same success Jim Harbaugh endured in his first four seasons. An unlikely scenario considering Harbaugh re-created the record books by becoming the first coach in NFL history to go to three consecutive NFC Championship Games, I highly doubt Tomsula can duplicate that early success. And with 49ers York saying that the coach will be reassessed after two years time if they don’t win a Super Bowl, the pressure is on for Tomsula to get the job done today.
With Tomsula getting the head coaching position, it will be interesting to see if Fangio stays considering he would have to work under a coach who was below him before today. If Fangio does in fact leave, look for 49ers secondary coach Ed Donatell to fulfill that role.
