San Francisco 49ers GM Trent Baalke was asked if his franchise QB Colin Kaepernick will be on the team’s roster after April 1 and Baalke did not hesitate to say ‘absolutely.’ The Nevada product is scheduled to earn $11.9 million in base salary that would become fully guaranteed if he was on the active roster after April 1.
Kaepernick’s future with the 49ers has been in doubt ever since he was benched in favor of QB Blaine Gabbert.
The No. 1 focus is getting him healthy,” Baalke said of Kaepernick. “Chip is excited to work with him, just as he’s excited to work with all of these guys.”
What does this mean for the quarterback position and can we really trust what Baalke says or is this a smoke-screen? Well, remember what Baalke said about the 49ers all-time leading rusher RB Frank Gore last off-season? Asked right before Gore’s last game of the 2014 season if that would be Gore’s last as a member of the San Francisco 49ers and Baalke said, “We sure hope not. He understands what he means to this organization,” Baalke said. “He would certainly like to be back, and we would certainly like to have him back.”
So with Kaepernick ‘asbolutely’ being in the team’s future plans you can rule out Cal’s QB Jared Goff as the team’s next franchise quarterback, as it appears the team is set on a two-way camp battle between Kap and Gabbert.
