When the San Francisco 49ers traded up with the Dallas Cowboys to select first-round pick (No. 18) FS Eric Reid, no one really knew for sure how good he would be. An LSU captain and the unquestioned leader of the SEC powerhouse, Reid would somehow move on and translate that success to the NFL his rookie season. A player that had big shoes to fill as FS Dashon Goldson was coming off an All-Pro season, Reid filled in admirably as he was voted on as a Pro Bowl alternate. Now, as he enters his sophomore season, he will have another tough task as he tries to build rapport with new free-agent signing SS Antoine Bethea.
Bethea, who is no slouch of his own as he enters his ninth season. A two-time Pro Bowl selection in 2007 and 2009, Bethea believes Reid is special as he’s poised beyond his years. The 49ers media caught up with Bethea at yesterday’s training camp and Bethea had this to say about Reid:
“He’s way beyond his years…just sitting next to him in the meeting room, talking to him, going through different plays and even out here on the field, how he’s vocal…I think this year’s going to be great for him.”
High praise coming from the two-time Pro Bowl safety, who also played with another Pro Bowler and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year SS Bob Sanders while in Indy. With the 49ers continuing their rise in training camp, we will keep you updated on the latest as it unfolds.
Bethea made a nice gesture at the end of his interview by ending it saying, “You all have a great day!”
