Apparently the San Francisco 49ers are not playing around with one of the best premier pass-rushers in the NFL, as they will not be picking up OLB Aldon Smith’s fifth-year option. Smith who has been dealing with off-field issues stemming back to last season is cause for concern for the 49ers and as a result will now become an unrestricted free-agent after this season. ESPN Insider Adam Schefter broke the news as he tweeted:
49ers are not expected to pick up the fifth-year option on LB Aldon Smith’s contract, per league source.

With Aldon currently on the outside looking in with a likely suspension from NFL’s Commissioner Roger Goodell, do not be surprised if the 49ers target an outside linebacker early in the draft as they already brought in Boise State DE Demarcus Lawrence for a pre-draft visit while sending Western Regional Scout Reggie Cobb to his pro-day.
