On if 49ers ILB Patrick Willis will have any problems taking over ILB NaVorro Bowman’s “Mike” role:

“To me if you’re an inside linebacker you’re an inside linebacker doesn’t matter if you’re the “Mike” or the “Jack”. Where the differences come in are the different assignments.”

On the possibility of ILB Patrick Willis permanently being moved to the Mike” position:

“We’ve been working Pat at “Mike” so he can be more interchangeable moving forward if that’s the best avenue we want to go down. So he’s more capable of playing both.”

On where the “Mike” position lines up:

“The “Mike” lines up to the tight-end side.”

On the domino effect of losing CB Carlos Rogers and CB Tarell Brown and how that impacts the secondary:

“I feel good about the guys that are here. You know Tramaine hasn’t had a full season starter but he certainly played a lot of football for us last year. Cully, as we all know, played a lot of football for us in his first two years here. We do have to find a nickel back.”

On if first-round pick DB Jimmie Ward will assume the starting nickel back role:

“No I don’t think you can assume that. He’s going to get every opportunity to. He’s missed all this time and he’s learning and a rookie. We all have to be a little patient with him but he’ll certainly get every opportunity to.”

On if he was surprised that CB Eric Wright abruptly retired:

“Right at the halfway point of OTAs we were going to move him to be the nickel to share those duties, D-Mo (CB Darryl Morris). I don’t know why he retired, I never had that discussion with him and so I really can’t shed any light on it.”
