The San Francisco 49ers today announced that they have signed TE Xavier Grimble and CB Leon McFadden to the team’s practice squad.
Grimble, who originally broke into the league as an undrafted rookie free-agent with the New York Giants this season, was released just weeks before the start of the season. At 6-5 and 255 pounds, Grimble will instantly provide depth to a banged up tight-ends unit that saw both TE Vernon Davis and TE Vance McDonald leave with injuries. Davis, is currently undergoing an MRI for his left ankle injury while McDonald is working through a knee injury. Both players will likely be questionable for the Arizona Cardinals (2-0) prompting them to sign Grimble.
McFadden on the other hand is a 2013 third-round pick (No. 68) of the Cleveland Browns. A player that was then traded to the New York Jets before being released, McFadden’s arrival may have been added to be counted on in the slot due to the recent struggles of first-round pick (No. 30) DB Jimmie Ward.
To make room on the roster for Grimble and McFadden, the team released CB Chance Casey and ILB Shayne Skov.
