The San Francisco 49ers today announced the signing of RB Alfonso Smith. The news comes just one day after RB LaMichael James went down to a dislocated elbow. A once crowded backfield, the running back position quickly turned for the worse that started with a torn ACL by RB Kendall Hunter. So what exactly can the former undrafted rookie free-agent provide the 49ers besides depth?
I hate to say it but not much. I would have rather them signed RB Michael Bush as he’s a bigger back that does not go down easily. And with Smith’s recent fumbling woes, as he’s fumbled three times in only 18 carries last season for the Arizona Cardinals, that doesn’t bode well for the team that takes pride in winning the turnover margin.
Can Smith actually crack the 53-man roster? I highly doubt it but it nonetheless brings competition to the running back position, something that both head coach Jim Harbaugh and GM Trent Baalke covet.
