49ers Schedule Pre-Draft Visit With Maryland WR Stefon Diggs

The San Francisco 49ers desperately need a wide-receiver to groom and as a result are bringing in Maryland WR Stefon Diggs in for a pre-draft visit.

According to league sources, Diggs will be making the trip to Santa Clara to check out the facility as well as meeting the team’s new coaching staff in early April. The 49ers who are allowed 30 pre-draft visits have already scheduled a visit with ILB Benardrick McKinney (Mississippi St.).

If you remember in an earlier article, I stated three reasons why the 49ers should draft a wide-receiver in the first-round. And while Diggs will likely be a second day pick–the 49ers could use their second-round (No. 46) selection on the Maryland product.

So what exactly does Diggs bring to the table?

There is no secret that 49ers GM Trent Baalke loves versatility and Diggs adds plenty of it as he can make an immediate impact in the return game. For any rookie that comes into the NFL, special-teams is their life line. If you can play special-teams, odds are you have a greater chance of making the 53-man roster.

The 49ers tried last year’s fourth-round pick (No. 106) WR Bruce Ellington but he struggled to field punts cleanly and will likely relish a bigger role on offense playing the slot. That leaves the return game wide open, making Diggs a perfect fit.

A player that can explode out of the gates, Diggs has the natural instincts to gain arms-length separation from defensive backs while plucking the ball out of mid-air. At 6-0, 195, Diggs is also a savvy route runner who can make multiple tacklers miss once he hits open space.

However, his game does have some flaws as he doesn’t run hard going across the middle while often getting re-directed on routes. Not to mention, his willingness to block on run plays is below average–Diggs will need to improve in these areas if he wants to play at the next-level.

With the 49ers doing their due diligence it is interesting to see them bring in Diggs for a pre-draft visit as they already met with another top wide receiver prospect in WR DeVante Parker.
