When Texas A&M hosted their Pro Timing Day on March 5, the 49ers contingent was present as Director of College Scouting Matt Malaspina was on hand to watch WR Mike Evans. In fact, Malaspina was so impressed by the Texas A&M product that he took it a step further by conducting a private meeting with him after his Pro Day.
Apparently the 49ers are falling in love with him as Regional Scout Bob Morris who controls the southern region was on hand today for QB Johnny Manziel’s Pro Day. Morris who continues to attend Pro Days as he was seen talking to SS Shamiel Gary at Oklahoma State was asked by the 49ers management to watch Evans catch passes from Manziel.

After every catch and route run, Morris was seen taking notes on Evans. Yesterday, I had the 49ers targeting WR Brandin Cooks and I stand by that prediction as I feel the 49ers would have to trade up in the top ten to secure Evans’ services, as I said:
“So why did I have the 49ers selecting Cooks over WR Mike Evans and WR Jordan Matthews? For one, Evans will likely go in the top 10 and with Evans being selected by the Buffalo Bills in my mock draft, as GM Doug Whaley favors SEC talent evident by his last three first-round draft picks, Evans will be too rich for the 49ers blood to strike a deal.”
And who was at today’s Pro Day as well? That’s right, the Buffalo Bills. Evans is by far better than Cooks’ in my opinion as he is a bigger redzone target while being ranked as the No. 3 wide receiver on my Big Board behind WR Sammy Watkins and WR Marqise Lee. However, the 49ers will likely need to strike a deal with the Atlanta Falcons who hold the No. 6 pick to secure Evans as the other teams in the top 10 are enamored with their positions.
With the 49ers continuing to do their due diligence, we will keep you posted on the latest as it unfolds.
