In the end I believe the San Francisco 49ers will land WR Brandin Cooks, however that is only IF they are unable to strike a deal with the Tennessee Titans at No. 11 first. A scenario I envision as the New York Jets have been rumored in possible trade talks with the AFC South squad in hopes of landing LSU product WR Odell Beckham Jr., the Jets simply do not have the ammo to outbid the 49ers who have 11 draft picks at their disposal including six in the top 100. And if GM Trent Baalke believes that Beckham is well worth the investment don’t think for a second he won’t pull the trigger as the 49ers simply don’t have enough cap space or roster space to sign 11 draft picks.
Last year Baalke traded down with the Tennessee Titans while selecting DE Tank Carradine (No. 40) in the process, so it would not be out of the ordinary for a trade between the two teams to strike again in 2014. Beckham has the ideal H-W-S and versatility that Baalke covets, but with the Jets rumored to be working the phones he may not be available in the middle of the first-round. However, should the 49ers trade just outside the top 10, look for them to take Beckham.
Beckham’s measurables were very similar to WR A.J. Jenkins but with a more explosive body of work. In addition, Beckham who is 5-11 and 198 pounds has an added bonus with his elongated wingspan measuring at 32 3/4 inches something Baalke is high on. Add those numbers to his game-film and impressive numbers at the NFL scouting combine as he ran a 4.43 (40-yard dash), 38.5-inch vertical, and 122-inch broad-jump you can see where his explosive fast-twitch muscles lie. And with Jenkins’ producing a similar stat sheet with a 4.39 (40-yard dash), 38.5-inch vertical and 124-inch broad-jump it’s no wonder Beckham Jr. is mocked to the 49ers by CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, and I have to agree as I believe he will be the 49ers No. 1 target.
With the NFL Draft just hours away, we will keep you all updated on the 49ers rumors and news as they unfold.
