According to reports, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh held a private workout with Eastern Illinois University star QB Jimmy Garoppolo at Northwestern today. A small school product, Garoppolo has since sky rocketed up draft boards as he is now projected to go in the second-round. And with the 49ers only having two quarterbacks currently under contract in QB Colin Kaepernick and QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson, the need for a backup is evident.
So who is Garoppolo? Hopefully not another QB Giovanni Carmazzi (Hofstra). Remember that guy? The hand selected quarterback the 49ers coveted in the third-round? He was supposed to be the future but never took a regular season snap under then head coach Steve Mariucci. Yeah that was a bust, but Garoppolo is different. He’s more mobile and very accurate.
According to former GM Bill Polian, a very good talent evaluator, he believes that Garoppolo may even go in the first-round. Would the 49ers really take a quarterback in the first-round? Highly unlikely. But if Garoppolo slides to the second-round, you can be sure the 49ers will not hesitate to pull the trigger as they have two second-round picks (No. 56) and (No. 61).
At 6-foot-2 and 226 pounds, Garoppolo has the build to withstand hard hits. And in 2013, Garoppolo had a career season as he threw for 5,050 passing yards and 53 touchdowns while being named the FCS Player of the Year.
With the 49ers needing a quarterback with the uncertain future of free-agent QB Colt McCoy, do not be surprised if they target Garoppolo as he may be another diamond in the rough.
