49ers’ Host Pre-Draft Visits For Devin Funchess, Byron Jones, and Donovan Smith

The San Francisco 49ers are hosting three more players on pre-draft visits as Michigan’s WR Devin Funchess, UCONN’s CB Byron Jones, and Penn State’s OL Donovan Smith have or will be making the trip out to Santa Clara.

At 6-4, 232, Funchess has the catching radius that scouts covet. And while he doesn’t necessarily use his body to his advantage as he rarely high-points the ball while being credited with 20 drops over the past three seasons, his versatility should not be overlooked.

Listed as a wide-receiver, the 49ers could move him to tight-end if they feel he is better suited inside. A position that is lacking depth anyways as TE Vance McDonald has been a bust, adding a player like Funchess would do wonders to the 49ers passing game especially in red zone opportunities.

However, Funchess isn’t the only one coming to Santa Clara as Jones will as well. A workout warrior at the NFL scouting combine as Jones literally leap-frogged his way into the second-round — should be a nice special-teams player early on.

At 6-1, 199, Jones is extremely instinctive who understands how to take proper angles to the ball carrier making Jones a likely target on day two. Whether sniffing out a halfback toss or diagnosing a hot-route quick-slant, Jones is very smart when it comes to pre-snap recognition.

At the NFL combine Jones blew scouts away with his olympic like measurables including 1 44.5-inch vertical, 147-inch broad jump, 6.78 second  three-cone drill, and 3.94 second short-shuttle.

Smith on the other hand should go in third-round. An offensive tackle while at Penn State, I project him to be moved to guard as the 49ers look to field competition for G Brandon Thomas and G/C Marcus Martin.
