49ers Host Pre-Draft Visit With Devin Smith

devinIt appears the San Francisco 49ers are not only targeting the top tier wide-receivers in this year’s draft but also preparing to trade down from the 15th selection if the price is right to target a tier two pass-catcher.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the team will bring in Ohio State Buckeye WR Devin Smith for a pre-draft visit.

A durable, explosive, and fast wide-receiver on the outside, I have Smith rated as this year’s best deep-threat option. He can keep defenses honest with his vertical game but it’s his work ethic that has scouts worried as some consider him to be a ‘class clown.’ And with Smith only knocking out 10 reps on the bench-press, it just goes to show that he was clearly cheating the weight room.

But his deep-field game can’t be denied as he averaged a whopping 28.2 yards per catch while 54.5% of his receptions came of at least 25 yards in 2014.

And while his big play ability has been well documented it’s his special-teams presence that has added value as some have labeled him as the top gunner in this year’s draft class. The 49ers lost both of their top gunners from 2013 as CB Tramaine Brock relished a starting role while FS C.J. Spillman left for the Dallas Cowboys last season, leaving special-teams to be a top priority.

49ers GM Trent Baalke loves to add players with versatility and with Smith proving he can be a capable downfield tackler while possibly adding return duties — makes him an ideal target if the team decided to trade down from the 15th spot.

With the 49ers continuing pre-draft visits we will keep you all updated as it unfolds.
