49ers’ Host Pre-Draft Visit For TCU ILB Paul Dawson

The San Francisco 49ers are not playing around in their search for an inside linebacker as they will bring in arguably the best player at the position in TCU ILB Paul Dawson.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Dawson is scheduled to meet with the 49ers tomorrow. At 6-0, 235, it remains to be seen whether Dawson’s frame can hold up at the next level and while he ran a very slow 4.93 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, he did display strength as he knocked out 21 reps on the bench press.

Although lacking speed, Dawson more than makes up for it with his read-and-react style of play. He is exceptional at diagnosing plays pre-snap while having the innate ability to evade offensive lineman when they hit the second level.

Arguably the best sideline-to-sideline inside linebacker in this year’s draft makes him an intriguing prospect for the 49ers. Not to mention, he was an absolute hog in the passing game as he only allowed a 35.7 percent completion rate, Dawson may be targeted by the team in the first-round if they opt to trade down in the 20s.

However, it’s his off-field behavior that scouts worried as he’s not very well liked by the TCU program while often neglecting the film-room study sessions.

With the 49ers bringing in Dawson, I’m sure it will be to gauge his personality more than anything else as his on-field skill-set speaks for itself.
