With the uncertain future of San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James as the 49ers are currently shopping the third-year running back, they are doing their due diligence in trying to find his replacement via the draft. They already scheduled a pre-draft visit with Towson RB Terrance West and now they are continuing that trend of bringing in small school running backs, as Cumberlands (Ky) RB Terrance Cobb will be making a pre-draft visit to Santa Clara headquarters.
The 49ers who have inside information on the small school product as Western Regional scout Reggie Cobb is Terrance’s older brother, they should have no problems having a thorough evaluation. At 5-foot-10 and 218 pounds, Cobb like West possess a similar punishing running style suited to the 49ers power running game. Two players that possess similar attributes, it will be interesting to see if the 49ers draft one of them as they already have RB Jewel Hampton on their practice squad.
Recently interview by Draft Diamonds, Cobb was asked which offense best suits him and he said, “The system that fits me best is probably ace formations or I-formations because I can oppose my will on the defense but I’m also experienced in the read option so I’m very talented in that system as well.” And asked what he would say to the GM that may draft him, Cobb said, “To sell myself to a GM I would say this I’m hard working young and willing to learn a system and do my best to perfect it and also I’ll do the dirty work for a team to win. I’m a winner and I’ll do what it takes to win not just on Sundays but through the week and my character will not be in question.”
However, don’t count out RB Storm Johnson (Central Florida) as he was also one of the first prospects to visit the 49ers. With the draft right around the corner, it should be no surprise if they draft a running back in rounds five through seven, as they are clearly in the market for a replacement for James.
