49ers’ hire Eric Mangini as Defensive Coordinator

According to ESPNs Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers will name Eric Mangini as the team’s new defensive coordinator.

Mangini, who has been with the 49ers the past two seasons serving first as the offensive special assistant in 2013 before moving to tight-ends coach in 2014, will now move positions once again as the defensive coordinator.

Mangini, served one year as the New England Patriots defensive coordinator in 2005 before moving on as a head coach with the New York Jets (2006-2008) and Cleveland Browns (2009-2010).

In Mangini’s lone season as the Patriots defensive coordinator, his unit ranked 26th in the NFL in total defense, while ranking 17th in scoring defense.

The word ‘stability’ comes to mind when selecting Mangini since he has been on the 49ers coaching staff these past two seasons while working with 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula in the process.
