During San Francisco 49ers GM Trent Baalke‘s annual pre-draft interview on Friday, I asked him two questions and two questions only. The first question was in regards to the 10-yard split and how much emphasis he gives that over the 40-yard dash. The second question was what he sees in WR Brandin Cooks, WR Mike Evans, and WR Kelvin Benjamin. Three players I have the 49ers targeting with gold helmets next to their name, you can be sure one will be in red and gold in 2014.
According to reports, Benjamin met with the 49ers brass as he came in for a pre-draft visit. A player that I envision as a possible tight-end due to his H-W-S as he stands 6-5 and 240 pounds, the big bodied receiver is another offensive weapon the 49ers may be targeting. However, despite his big play ability it’s his separation and ball skills that make him a tier No. 2 wide receiver in this year’s draft class.
49ers GM Trent Baalke went on record on Friday saying he covets wide receivers that can “get the ball” and “play the ball,” and while Benjamin certainly has shown he can do those things, it’s the consistency that will likely have him targeted as a projected second-round pick. A tough player that has no fear going across the middle, look for Benjamin to be a sought after player in next month’s draft.
In 2013, Benjamin amassed 54 catches for 1,011 receiving yards (18.7 avg.) and 15 touchdowns.
