According to the San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco 49ers OLB Aldon Smith was not the only Niner at LAX on Sunday as Hall of Fame S Ronnie Lott and his family were also present. According to Lott’s wife Karen she was shocked to see the number of police cars outside the Southwest Airlines terminal as she said:

Wow. Something crazy must be going on here.

Lott unaware that Smith was the subject of the chaotic scene was told by one of the agents, as he said: “Hey, one of your guys was just here.” After finding out that Aldon was detained, Lott had this to say about the star player via Bay Area News Group:

I felt bad for him. He’s got so much ahead of him as a person. Forget football — as a person. I’m worried about him as an individual. I’m sure that the people that are working with him with the 49ers will do a good job. They have very good people.

Lott who only met Aldon one time at the end of the 2012 regular season which was an arranged by former 49ers LB Keena Turner, said that Aldon made a good first impression. In fact the conversation over coffee was mainly about “finding out how to be the best you could be.”

Now with Aldon finding himself in hot water once again, the question remains should the 49ers use their fifth-year option on him? Despite his off-field issues, I would say absolutely yes. Is he a young kid that has made some poor choices during his tenure with the team? Most definitely! But give him another year to prove his worth, and if he does continue to have future run-ins with the law then I would say enough is enough and it’s time to go.
