According to CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, the San Francisco 49ers should be expecting not one but two compensatory picks in next year’s 2015 NFL draft. The news comes after the free-agency frenzy has died down. A period that saw the 49ers lose five key players including SS Donte Whitner, CB Tarell Brown, RB Anthony Dixon, WR Mario Manningham, and QB Colt McCoy, while only signing UFA SS Antoine Bethea, you can see where the picks come into play.
According to Maiocco, compensatory free-agents are determined by a secret formula in which the NFL formulates based on salary, playing time, and any postseason honors. In addition players that are released like CB Carlos Rogers are not included into the formula. Maiocco, also made it a point to say that due to the June 1 deadline, unrestricted free-agents such as C Jonathan Goodwin would not count if he signed with another NFL team due to being signed after the June 1 deadline.
With compensatory picks likely to be awarded in March, it will be interesting to see how many the 49ers receive as they have had a plethora of draft picks in recent years.
