49ers’ Chris Culliver kicked out of practice, rookie Bruce Ellington shines

The San Francisco 49ers continued their training camp this morning with an early morning session. A practice that saw many big plays and touchdowns, no player stood out more than rookie fourth-round pick WR Bruce Ellington.

A player that was a two-sport athlete as Ellington played point guard for the South Carolina Gamecocks, Ellington had a stellar day. Whether winning his one-on-one battles or scoring touchdowns on 11-on-11 situational drills, Ellington shined while taking advantage of his opportunities as WR Michael Crabtree, WR Brandon Lloyd, and WR Quinton Patton are all nursing injuries.

Starting with one-on-one drills, Ellington was lined up across four-year veteran CB Perrish Cox and used an array of moves to get open which ended off a 10-yard comeback route. A play in which Cox was playing tight coverage, Ellington’s quickness and ability to find the needed space is what made the play successful.

The success didn’t stop there for Ellington as he would make numerous catches in 11-on-11 drills including a 38-yard touchdown reception from QB Josh Johnson. A play in which fellow rookie fourth-round pick CB Dontae Johnson was playing one-on-one coverage on the outside, Ellington used his after burners to separate from Johnson while hauling in the long touchdown reception. A rookie that I went on record with KNBR saying that he would make the biggest impact in the 2014 season, he continues to prove me right.

With Ellington having a good practice, it was TE Vernon Davis who continues to prove his worth. The nine-year veteran scored two touchdowns in 11-on-11 drills including a 40-yard touchdown reception from QB Colin Kaepernick. A play-action pass rolling left, Kaepernick found a mismatch as Davis was up against ILB Nick Moody.

culliverSpeaking of the defensive side of the ball, it was CB Chris Culliver who was removed from practice after delivering a blow to WR David Reed. Culliver who continues to look the part of a day one starter as he displayed his fluid hips and athleticism early on in practice was told to get off the field by 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh.

In one-on-one drills, T Jonathan Martin was seen being bull-rushed to the ground by NT Tony Jerod-Eddie.

OLBs Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, ILB NaVorro Bowman, and TE Vernon Davis were all seen talking to Culliver after the incident.
