The San Francisco 49ers today brought back one of their own, as special-teams ace WR Kassim Osgood was back in Santa Clara this morning. A roster move that was made possible as NT Glenn Dorsey will go on IR/Designated to return, Osgood will now be back to lead the squad. I caught up with KO earlier this afternoon and discussed why he was released and brought back and he said, “I know it’s always a possibility, it’s again being able to work within the rules of the league, and being able to keep people that want to be there…I knew it could potentially for it to happen. So it wasn’t a big deal for me.”
The reasoning behind Osgood being released and then brought back was due to his salary. If a vested veteran is on the 53-man roster deadline, his contract would be fully guaranteed. However, if he is added to the 53-man roster after the deadline, he’s basically a pay per week player. A smart move for the 49ers, Osgood decided to come back to San Francisco despite fielding some offers from other teams.
With Osgood now back in the fold, it will be interesting to see how he fares, as he has a new squad to work with that includes rookies ILB Chris Borland, DB Jimmie Ward, CB Dontae Johnson, and L.J. McCray.
