With the San Francisco 49ers reaching their 53-man roster limit, there was no shortage of surprise cuts. From DE Darnell Dockett to G/C Dillon Farrell, there were many notable NFL players who were given their walking papers as the 1 p.m. PT deadline past.

Now that all 32 NFL teams are essentially set, it’s now time for every NFL General Manager to due their due diligence and find that diamond in the rough. Should a talented player fall through the cracks and be released, another team can now add them to either the team’s practice squad or 53-man roster via the waiver wire.
The waiver wire is based on the 2015 NFL draft order for the first three weeks of the season, so the 49ers wouldn’t be able to pick up a coveted player until 14 other teams had the chance to do so. After the three weeks have past, the waiver wire priority then changes based on current NFL standings.
Waiver Wire Eligibility
But which players are waiver wire eligible? Players who have less than four accrued seasons go through waivers. Players with at least four years of accrued seasons don’t go through waivers during the first half of the season, and instead immediately become free agents.
A player accrues a season when he is on the 53-man roster, Injured Reserve or Physically Unable To Perform list (PUP) for at least six games.

- While on the team’s practice squad, the player has the right to sign with another team’s 53-man roster. However, the player may NOT sign a contact with his current team’s next opponent until after 1 p.m. PT six days preceding the game (10 days preceding bye week).
